The determination of moisture content of a solid fuels is essential, since the moisture content decreases significantly the energetic density of the fuel, increasing the mass and volume of the fuel and reducing its net heating value.

European Standard

  • EN 14774-1 Solid biofuels. Determination of moisture content. Oven dry method – Part 1: Total moisture, reference method. The determination of the moisture content can be carried out with a higher accuracy employing the temperatures and characteristics described in this norm in a thermogravimetric analysis to determine the moisture content.

Drying oven

Apparatus
  • Drying oven Memmert UFE 500 capable of maintaining a temperature of 105ºC with an accuracy of 1ºC. The oven has a fan with a variable rotating velocity, capable of imposing a controlled air flow inside the oven.
  • Scale

Sample trays made of non corrosible and heat resistant material. The surface of the tray must be higher than 500 cm2, so that the mass of the sample can be 500 g.
  • Scale capavble of weighing the tray and the sample with an accuracy of 0.1 g.

Sample size

  • In general terms, the minimum mass of the sample will be 300 g, resulting in a proportion lower than 1 g per cm2 of tray.
  • In case of analyzing fine particles a mass of 100 g can be employed, using a scale with an accuracy of 0.01 g.

Sample

Procedure

  • The mass of the empty and clean tray is measured.
  • The sample is distributed homogeneously over the tray surface. Then the mass of the tray and the sample is determined.
  • Another similar tray (reference tray) is weighed empty and clean.
  • If the packing of the sample contents moisture, it is also dryied and its moisture content is determined as the mass difference obtained before and after the drying process at 105ºC. This moisture content must be considered in the calculation process.
  • Drying process

The tray with tha sample is placed in the oven together with the reference tray. The temperature in the oven is increased until 105ºC.
  • The two trays are maintained at 105ºC in the oven until the mass variation is lower than 0.2% during a period of 1 h.
  • Determination of the mass after the drying process, weighing the tray with the sample in less than 15 s after taking it from the oven.
  • Determination of the mass of the reference tray, weighing it in less than 15 s after taking it from the oven.

Experimental results

  • Moisture content in a wet basis.
  • Moisture content in a dry basis.
